Left Bank is an homage to the Pictorialist and Modernist photographers of the early 20th century whose images and techniques were considered radical for their time. A focus through their lenses conveyed significant artistic figures of the day, and their work revolutionized the way the world viewed photography as an art form.
Like these photographers, Hannah Neal is creating portraits of artists, dancers, writers, musicians and others whose work inspires her. The images, captured on film, are made using the same lighting techniques, materials and traditional processes employed during that early era.
The Left Bank series is presented as photogravures, a technique invented in the mid-1800s and the primary method used by the Pictorialists. This printmaking process uses a light-sensitive polymer plate which is exposed to a film positive, etched, inked and printed on an intaglio press. Hannah Neal journals a pictorial story, unfolding a vision of nostalgia and noir, of mystique and drama.
